The Unique Features of the region Zahorie

Have you ever heard of the Habans? The term denominates groups of Germans who was compelled to emigrate through the territories of former Austrian Empire to Russia and later to the United States of America. The reason for their migration was their religion. These groups were living for approximately 2 centuries also in the territory of contemporary Moravia and Slovakia. One of the best preserved communities of the Habans in Slovakia can be found in the village Velke Levare. More than 20 houses, having features of the German Late Gothic architectural style and dated to the time span of the 17th and 19th century, have been proclaimed to be the one of the largest vernacular architecture of the Habans not only on the Slovak but also on the European level. In one of the houses called the Izer's House has been established the Museum of the Haban Ceramics called “fajansa”. The exposition delivers a precise picture about the Habans as very skilled craftsmen who variegated the local handicrafts, incorporating the Haban features into the indigenous style of folk handicrafts in the south-western Slovakia.

If you feel a strong desire for a relax in the bosom of nature, we recommend you Moravske Luhy, situated in the vicinity of the Austrian town Marchegg - the westernmost natural reserve in Slovakia. The land has been modified by extensive accumulation of wind-blown sediments and sand. The gradual process of the transformation resulted into the largest landscape of this kind in the Central Europe. Moravske Luhy has become the largest colony of the white stork, having their nests in treetops. Marchegg is easily accessible from Devinska Nova Ves (the district Bratislava IV),   crossing the Freedom Cycling Bridge. The cycle route Kamp-Thaya-March leads you directly to Marchegg.

The Small Carpathians region has been for centuries associated primarily with the best wines, there is no doubt about it. Have you known also about the Red Stone Castle (in Slovak: hrad Cerveny kamen)? Among its treasures belong the largest complex of underground wine cellars, the oldest pharmacy dated back to the year 1649, the widest range of predatory birds, and the largest array of antique furniture. To the territory of the castle belongs also an educational trail dedicated to the nature of the region.

One more tip for all visitors interested in culture and history of our land. Does you the name of Ludovit Stur sound familiar? Some facts for those of you who read the name for the first time: Ludovit Stur, as the deputy of the Hungarian Parliament, stood at the beginning of the Slovak national movement in the 19th century, struggling for the national self-determination of Slovaks living in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. The town Modra, the last domicile of Ludovit Stur, offers you the largest collection of heritage dedicated to his life and work: the exact replica of his workroom, a museum bearing his name with collection of articles witnessing the contribution of the most influential Slovak personality of the 19th century.

The Bratislava region is well-known by its places and history, unique in the European criteria and the centre of the region – the capital Bratislava – does not lag behind. At first, we mention the Apollo bridge: its length 757,8 feet, its weight 5200 tons. Due to the construction technology used here for the first time in the world, the construction was awarded the OPAL AWARDS 2006, taken over in the United States.  The name of our capital is associated also with the very first beginning of modern aviation. The first helicopter flight of the inventor and engineer Jan Bahyl took place in the year 1897, on the square known by its contemporary name “Namestie Slobody” (the Freedom Square).
